Not-for-Profit
Organisations operating in the not-for-profit sector encounter a specific set of challenges. They must respond to a rapidly changing social, regulatory, governance and funding landscape, while negotiating many of the same obstacles faced by for-profit businesses.
Piper Alderman has represented charity and not-for-profit clients for many years, gaining deep insight into the legal issues impacting on the sector. Our specialist national Not-for-Profit Practice Group brings together more than ten partners from our Corporate, Commercial, Intellectual Property, Dispute Resolution, Tax and Employment teams who advise clients in the sector and who actively partner with those clients to assist them to achieve their objectives and minimise their risks.
In an era where not-for-profit organisations need to be increasingly sophisticated, we aim to develop a comprehensive understanding of our clients’ requirements and objectives and the environment in which they operate, facilitating more effective, targeted and responsive legal advice.
We also prioritise our work for not-for-profit clients alongside our other clients and deploy the partner with the most appropriate expertise to provide the advice our clients require.
Our partners have unique expertise advising this sector, particularly in the area of governance issues. We also provide specialist advice to not-for-profit clients in relation to complex structuring and restructuring arrangements. We advise on organisation and board structuring, including designing frameworks to facilitate transparency and stakeholder input and devising strategies to assist in the appointment and retention of board members with the appropriate mix of skills. We have acted on mergers of not-for-profit entities, strategic alliances, board spills, transitions from incorporated associations to public companies limited by guarantee and other complex structuring arrangements.
